For Those Who Sacrificed

War is ugly. It is antithetical to the loving community that Christ came to establish. The bloody wars of today and years gone by are the result of nations that, despite all other interventions, simply cannot agree. There is an old saying that “When the elephants fight, the ants get trampled.” Therefore, we never hesitate to honor those who served, placing themselves in harm’s way, and have paid the ultimate price with their lives.

As is customary on Monday night at camp meeting—in commemoration of Memorial Day—to acknowledge the sacrifices of those who lived, served and died for this country.

At the start of the tribute, Elder Leslie Louis called all to order with impassioned words about sacrifice. Service members from each branch of the US Armed Forces were acknowledged, including special groups like conscientious objectors and, most notably, gold star families. Those recognized were gifted a commemorative coin to honor and thank them for their service.

We are grateful for all of our Carolinians who have served us and our country, and we are especially grateful to the ones who left to serve but never came home. Jesus said “greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend.” John 15:13. These sacrificial men and women point us back to Jesus, who engaged in the celestial war for our souls, and as a result of the fight, willingly gave his own life so that we could live with God forever.
